GSXR 600 K5 tail conversion + quite a bit more in the end.

Post by cabbie on Tue 18 Nov 2008, 07:56

Hi guys, doing a gsxr 600 K5 seat unit conversion.

Here's my 94 RRR blade

After 1 hour

Here's the new gsxr 600 tail unit

Started the subframe work, I cut the two sections apart and shortened the top so the tail will fit

Got a sheet of 3mm alloy and some 22mm square bar

How many of the first blades are being chopped up?
Will make the stock ones worth so much more.

Just what i think.

all said and done, i have to admit that i like the idea of a slimmer rear on the fat Blade. but..oh yeah, me and me but's again Laughing I do like to see a Blade in its standard clothes, nothing to do with value or future value its only because these bikes are modern Classics and we need to presreve some examples..Nice job tho mate, im crurious to see the finished mod Very Happy

who's contradicting themselfs? rofl

I think that will look nice and it does tidy the rear of the early blades which looks wise im not that keen on.
Would i do it to completely standard one?.Probably not now but its personal choice and ive done it in the past.
They are a future classic but i dont think they fetch "classic" prices yet .Maybe in 10-15 years.
Cabbie.. i had one the same model and colours as yours with the only mod bieng those"flush"indicators like yours on the front .Mine were in white though
Ive contradicted myself as well! rofl

Know what you mean, I think prices have finally bottomed out, and will start to rise very soon..

It's funny a few years ago my mate traded in his RD250LC against a R6..they gave him £1500 PX, he had had the bike from new in '82 and back then it only cost him £825..!!!!

It is annoying that CBR400 are worth more these days, but prices with get better soon.. sunny

Mine has been under the knife, well grinder actually. Lol.

Nice Blade there cabbie. Should of gone down the early R6 route like mine mate. Really is easy to do. R6 seat subframe goes into the Fireblade frame with a small bit of tweaking. The only welding required is the plate that the fuel tank bolts to needs cutting off standard subframe & welding onto the R6 subframe.

Nice to see some interest in this thread.

First off a subframe on eBay only costs a few quid and the bike can be put back to standard in a couple of hours.

Second, I'm doing this mod as I hated the BIG seat unit so I went for the smallest replacement I could, the gsxr 600 K5 does need more fabrication work over the gsxr 1000 to fit the blade subframe but it's work I'm looking forward to doing (I like fabricating as much as riding)

I'll keep updating as the project progresses

I'm with alsieboy each to their own, i think the fat seat units are a sign of the times and look good on the right bikes but i'm also a big fan of modification.

Looks the nuts cabbie, keep us posted

I do like that sharp look! I think that original boxed rear is now dated its a bit like the GSXR Srad looks dated but has a place in time.

It will be good to see the finished product. well done.

The gsxr 600 K5 seat arrived and looks 100% better than the blade seat, I had to cut both front mounting lugs off though so work will be needed making new fixing points etc (no big deal)

There will be a little more subframe showing but I can live with that.

Now I know the tail unit's final position I can start making the mounting points

I'm going to pop rivet all the new fixings to the frame and when I'm happy with it I'll get it all welded up.

Two guys PM'd asking for a detailed build thread:

I fitted the front cowl brackets with 5mm rivets (I'll get them welded later)

I used proper body mounting fixings.

I'm going to use the blade hinge from the old seat (don't like the hump being taken off, it gets scratched etc) Should be a simple case of two small plates.

Next update soon.

I've clamped the hinge braket on to the mounting bar and taped some rubber washers to the cowl

The hump can now be placed in position

The holes in the hinge and hump unit are dead in line but two 10mm spacers will be needed.

Made a start on the hump bracket
12x12mm bar

One hour later fitted to hump

I didn't have any cap head screws so used countersunk just to check fit

For the first fitting it's very close, bit high but I'll get the rear cowl brace made for the back so the cowl is solid to the subframe and make the necessary adjustments to the hump

I'm not sure it is high, it could be just the picture being deceptive, but it sems to line up very well with the tail section! respect

been as it's in line with the seat unit, if it was me then I would try and add to the cowl to close the gap, add some fibreglass and trim it back to make the cowl bigger.....if you know what I mean..sort of like this..
